GOGA-01255: This photograph collection was donated by Julia Gorman Porter (c/o Catherine P. Short) on October 8, 1987, and formally accessioned on October 20, 1987.

SAFR-00001: This is a blanket accession that was transferred from the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) to the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park in September 1988. GGNRA had previously acquired the collection from the San Francisco Maritime Museum which was a unit of the National Park Service from 1977-1987.

Historical or Biographical Note

John Joseph Gorman (1894-1961) was a marine engineer and an employee of the Tide Water Associated Oil Company and one of its predecessor companies for 30 years. Many of his family members were early settlers in San Francisco, California, and were influential in the city's commerce and development.

John Joseph Gorman's father was Michael Joseph Gorman, born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1857. Michael married Ellen Marie Boyhan, born in San Francisco in March 1864, in 1890. Michael Gorman died between the years of 1915-1920. John was born in California on January 19, 1894. John had a younger sister named Julia Gorman (Porter) (February 4, 1897-August 22, 1990), who was a Democratic Party leader and longtime member of the San Francisco Planning Commission (1943-1976).

From June 6, 1913 to December 16, 1916, John worked as an apprentice in the machine shops at Union Iron Works of San Francisco. John worked for the Standard Oil Company from 1917 into the 1920s. He was a Junior Engineer on S.S. ASTRAL in May 1917, sailing from Taku Bar, China, on April 11, 1917, and arriving in San Francisco on May 2, 1917 (California, Passenger and Crew Lists, 1882-1957). Sometime after this, he shipped out on J.A. MOFFETT (built 1915; tanker), as a handwritten note on John's World War I Draft Registration Cards says "his father states he is at sea on board the J.A. MOFFETT Standard Oil Vessel, 8/7/17" (World War I Selective Service System Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918). John sailed on W.S. RHEEM (built 1918; tanker) as 3rd Assistant Engineer from at least January-March 1919. He sailed to Japan on STANDARD ARROW (built 1916; tanker) in 1919 and also likely sailed on BROAD ARROW (built 1918; tanker) the same year. A ship manifest from September 1920 lists Gorman as the 2nd Engineer aboard D.G. SCOFIELD (built 1916; tanker).

John Gorman was employed by one of Tide Water Associated Oil Company's predecessor companies starting on April 16, 1924. The company was acquired by the Tide Water Associated Oil Company in the late 1920s. John worked at Tide Water Associated Oil Company for at least 30 years, and in 1955, he received a certificate of recognition for 30 years of service. The Diamond Service Emblem Dinner program of March 9, 1955 lists Gorman as an employee of their marketing department.

John volunteered on the War Price and Rationing Board in 1943 and received a certificate of completion on May 1, 1943, acknowledging 300 hours of service. On December 31, 1949, John Gorman received a certificate from the city and county of San Francisco for his service as a member of the San Francisco Police Reserve.

It is unknown if John Gorman was ever married: he was listed as single in the U.S. Censuses from 1910-1940. John Gorman died at age 67 on October 6, 1961, in San Francisco.

John's family members: Gorman's great aunt, Julia, traveled to Europe, China, and Japan, bringing back Japanese kimonos, wooden shoes, and parasols for the children, which were then the envy of their playmates (Porter, Julia G, and Gabrielle S. Morris, 10).

Many of John's family members were influential in San Francisco's commerce and development: His sister, Julia Gorman Porter (1897-1990), provided years of service in local, state, and national Democratic Party activities. Julia was appointed to the Planning Commission in 1943 by Mayor Roger Lapham and continued as a member of the commission until she retired in the 1970s. She was a co-founder of the San Francisco Housing and Planning Association (which became the San Francisco Planning and Urban Renewal Association), and was a member of the Democratic State Central Committee from 1941 to 1960. In 1924, she was married to Dr. Charles Bruce Porter, a dentist, who died in 1949.

According to an oral history with Julia in 1977, other family members were influential as well: John's paternal grandfather, David Gorman, came to San Francisco from Boston in the 1850s or 1860s and established himself in the printing business (he died at the age of 31) (Porter, Julia G, and Gabrielle S. Morris, 3-4). John's maternal grandfather, John Boyhan, established himself in the carriage-making business when he arrived in San Francisco in the early 1860s, and the business eventually became very successful. John's great uncles were the Mahoney brothers , who owned the firm, Mahoney Brothers. Jeremiah Mahoney (died 1917) and his brother were responsible for building the St. Francis Hotel; the Shreve building (Porter, Julia G, and Gabrielle S. Morris, 4); the Palace Hotel; the Flood residence; the Bank of California; and the Crocker, Phelan, Hearst and Flood buildings (Western Architect and Engineer, 110).

Another of their great uncles was Domingo Marcucci (his father's uncle through marriage), who owned the first steamboat that went between San Francisco and Stockton, and San Francisco and Sacramento (Porter, Julia G, and Gabrielle S. Morris, 2). "Another great treat was lunch on the GOLD or MARY GARRET, two stern wheeler river boats owned by my great uncle" (Porter, Julia G, and Gabrielle S. Morris, 10).

Gorman photograph collection, 1898-1955, bulk 1912-1923, (SAFR 23367, P87-032) is primarily comprised of photographs of John Gorman's travels as a marine engineer for Standard Oil Company and his personal travels, mostly in California, as well as ephemera from professional and personal activities. The collection has been processed to the File Unit level with some Items listed and is open for use.

There are 1070 items in 1075 physical forms (1035 black-and-white photographic prints, 2 postcards, 5 letters, 8 certificates, 21 pieces of foreign paper currency, and 4 ephemeral items).

The collection contains two photograph albums documenting Gorman's travels as a marine engineer for Standard Oil Company and travels with his friends and family. Prominently represented California locations include: San Francisco, Cisco, Lake Tahoe, Mill Valley, Marin County and Paradise Cove. Other locations shown include Alaska, Hawaii, Illinois, New York, Utah, Washington, Canada, an unidentified location in the Caribbean Sea, China, El Salvador, England, Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines. There are multiple photographs of the following vessels: CAPTAIN A.F. LUCAS (built 1904; tanker), D.G. SCOFIELD (built 1916; tanker), HAXTUM (built 1920; freighter), J.A. MOFFETT (built 1915; tanker), STANDARD ARROW (built 1916; tanker) and W.S. RHEEM (built 1918; tanker).

There are also loose photographs showing Gorman as a child, Corinthian Yacht Club events, and travels abroad. The collection also contains certificates, ephemera, and photographs collected by Gorman for professional achievement with the Tide Water Associated Oil Company, his early career as a marine engineer, and for volunteer activities.

Scope and Content Note

Items 0001-0359. Contains 359 black-and-white photographic prints of various sizes, in a 7.25 x 11.5 inch photograph album. John Gorman is present in many of the photographs. There are many photographs of recreation and leisure, including people riding horses, men dressed in kimonos (most likely at sea) and his friends' children. Some photographs appear to be of Gorman's early career as a marine engineer, working for Standard Oil on tankers at sea. Several photographs are of people at Camp Lewis, Washington, in 1917.

The album includes many photographs of friends and family of John Gorman, including his sister Julia Gorman Porter, Grace Baker, the Dwyer family, M. Heich, Harry Reilly Sr., Jane Reilly, Alice Reilly, Harry Reilly Jr., Bill Pitt, "Mike and Ted," as well as many unidentified people.

The photographs are primarily of California locations, especially the San Francisco Bay Area, Alameda, Monte Rio, and Cisco. Cisco (formerly Heaton Station) is an unincorporated community in Placer County, California. The name Cisco honors John J. Cisco, treasurer of the Central Pacific Railroad. There are several photographs of the Cisco Outing Club. There are also some photographs taken in Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Canada, Mexico and the Philippines.

Items 0360-1004. Contains 645 black-and-white photographic prints of a various sizes, in an 11.5 x 15.5 inch black photograph album. John Gorman is present in many of the photographs. Some photographs appear to be of his early career as a marine engineer working for Standard Oil on tankers at sea. There are many photographs of recreation and leisure, including people playing at the beach, camping or being outdoors, taking car trips, and landscape and snow scenes. Many of the photographs towards the end of the album are not labeled and seem to be photographs of Gorman's travels and companions. The album includes friends and family of John Gorman, including his sister Julia Gorman Porter, the Dwyer family, "Weary Willie" Gallagher, as well as many unidentified people.

The photographs are primarily of California locations, especially the San Francisco Bay Area, Cisco, Los Angeles and the Tahoe National Forest. There are also some photographs of the Hawaiian Islands; Chicago, Illinois; New York, New York; Ogden and Salt Lake City, Utah; various locations in Washington state; Canada; China; England; Japan; Mexico; Panama; El Salvador (San Salvador); and unidentified locations in the Caribbean Sea.

It appears as though for some of the album pages, photographs were placed in the book using only one side of the page (e.g. the right side), and then later, other photographs were put on the reverse side (e.g. the left side). Consequently, for many of the pages, there is the same subject on consecutive even pages and a different subject on consecutive odd pages in the album. There are seventeen blank pages, with no photographs attached to them at the end of the album. Several of the photographs in the album are bent on the edges but the images can still mostly be seen.

Items 1005-1033. These items were found grouped together during processing in 2013. It is unknown why these photographs are grouped together (or by whom).

Item list:

Item 1005: A picture postcard of John, Ellen, and Julia Gorman, between approximately 1900 and 1905.
Item 1006: A letter to John Gorman's mother dated September 14, 1910, from Brother Gregory [Prine] informing her of John's completion of the grammar course at Sacred Heart College.
Items 1007-1008: Two photographs of the 25th Annual Dinner at the Corinthian Yacht Club, January 9, 1916, Belvedere, California. Item 1007 is the Cooks and Waiters Union 23 (John Gorman is in the front row, second from the left) and Item 1008 is a larger group portrait including men in suits and a band (John Gorman is sitting in the front row, seventh from the right). Both have inset graphics which include identifying information, a write-up about the union and a menu for the event.
Item 1009: A souvenir postcard affixed to a piece of paper with the songs "Are My Boy" and "The Transport Thomas Rag" from the U.S.A.T. THOMAS (built 1894; troop transport: U.S. Army). "In memory of my trip from Manila to Honolulu" is typed on the paper.
Items 1010-1016: Eight loose photographs, circa 1916-1923. Includes portraits of John Gorman with unidentified men, one photograph of Gorman with a Corinthian Yacht Club lifesaving ring, unidentified waterfronts, and unidentified vessels underway.
Items 1018-1020: Gorman's Standard Oil Company employee card and 5 photographs of Gorman, October 29, 1918, and circa 1918. These were originally housed in a leather identification wallet; the items were removed from the wallet for preservation and stored together in the same enclosure. The wallet is included in the collection.
Items 1021-1024: Four photographs of men in kimonos from Gorman's trip to Japan in 1919 on board STANDARD ARROW (see Photograph album 2, File Unit 2, pages 10 and 12, for other photographs from this trip).
Item 1025: One photograph of Gorman in La Union or San Salvador, El Salvador, circa 1919 (see Photograph Album 2, File Unit 2, pages 35, 37, 39, 41 for other photographs from La Union, [San] Salvador).
Item 1026: A photograph of Gorman with four unidentified people in front of an unidentified vessel, from Gorman's trip to Liverpool, England, 1920 (see Photograph album 2, File Unit 2, pages 74 and 75 for other photographs from this trip).
Items 1027-1029: Three photographs from what appear to be a trip to Alaska which included Fairbanks and Kasaan in Union Bay in July 1923.
Items 1030-1033: Four photographs of what appear to be World War II War Price and Rationing Board -- or affiliated entities -- offices and meetings, one includes Julia Gorman Porter, circa 1941-1945.

Items 1034-1041. Includes material related to J.J. [John] Gorman's employment anniversaries with the oil refining company Tide Water Associated Oil Company of San Francisco. All materials were received in a manila envelope addressed to "Mr. J. J. Gorman; Tide Water Associated Oil Company; 16th & Illinois Streets; San Francisco, California," with the return address "Tide Water Associated Oil Company; 79 New Montgomery Street; San Francisco, California" on it; 1955 was written in pencil on the front of the envelope.

Items 1035-1036: A letter on Tide Water Associated Oil Company letterhead accompanying Item 1036: a black-and-white photographic print, 8 x 10 inches, of the Western Division Diamond Service Emblem Recipients, 1950. Gorman is fourth from the right in the third row.
Item 1037: A letter from John J. Gorman dated March 25, 1950, extending his appreciation for the photograph commemorating his 25 years of service.
Item 1038: A letter on Tide Water Associated Oil Company letterhead informing Gorman of his recognition of 30 years of service and inviting him to the recognition ceremony, February 21, 1955.
Item 1039: Program from the Diamond Service Emblem Dinner, March 6, 1955.
Item 1040: One black-and-white photographic print, 8 x 10 inches, of the Diamond Service Emblem Dinner held on March 9, 1955.

Items 1042-1070. Includes various certificates of achievement and appreciation regarding his early career as a marine engineer and his volunteer activities. Also includes foreign currency, most likely obtained on his travels as a crew member on board vessels.

Item 1042: Department of Commerce Steamboat Inspection Service license to operate, July 14, 1914.
Item 1043: Union Iron Works Co. certificate of Machine Shop apprenticeship, December 23, 1916.
Item 1044: Department of Commerce Steamboat Inspection Service License to Assistant Engineer of Steam Vessels, January 14, 1921.
Item 1045: Department of Commerce Certificate of Efficiency to Lifeboat Man, January 26, 1922.
Items 1046-1047: War Service Award from the Office of Price Administration with a photograph of 16 people, most likely serving on the Rationing Board, posed in front of the Rationing Board District No. 6 building, May 1, 1943. The people were identified on the original enclosure, which said: Hughes, Lynch, Dr. Drew, Ashley, Larson, Walsh, Pelton, Hawthorn, Clausen, Scott, Piperling, Butler/ Sutter, Magill, Sturgeon, Paulsen, Daritt. "Viales B. Photo Studio; 4723 Geary Blvd.; San Francisco Calif." stamped on the back of the print.
Item 1048: Certificate of Award from the Office of Price Administration, January 3, 1944.
Item 1049: Certificate of appreciation for service as a member of the San Francisco Police Reserve, December 31, 1949.

Foreign paper currency (21 notes) of various denominations (Items 1050-1070): Russian bills from 1889-1920 - Rubles -- (3 notes for 1 ruble; 3 notes for 3 rubles; 2 notes for 5 rubles; 2 notes for ten rubles; 1 note for 20 rubles; 1 note for 25 rubles; and 1 note for 50 rubles); 2 kopecks (2 notes, 50 kopecks each); 2 Interest Coupons: possibly issued in 1917 to be redeemed by 1922. Other - 1 German 5 mark bill from 1918; 1 Korean yen note from the Bank of Chosen, 1915; 1 Philippine National Bank peso, 1918; 1 Chinese 50 sen note, circa 1917-1921.
