A three page handwritten letter, referred to as a "memorial", addressed to San Francisco Town Council dated December 25, 1849 requesting compensation to the owner of a building, Horace O Gaylord, that was demolished to prevent the spread of a fire. The letter is written on behalf of Gaylord by his attorneys - Dwinelle, Holt and Marshall. The commercial building was located on Portsmouth Plaza behind the Parker House Hotel, between Washington and Clay Streets. The building was demolished on the order of Mssrs. Brannon, Stewart amd Simmonds representing the Town Council. The building was nearly complete at a cost of $10,000 and was located on a property on which Gaylord was paying $300 per month rent. The top part of the building was already leased for $500 per month and the asking rent for the balance was $25,000. Requesting compensation in the amount of $10,000. The title "Memorial of Horace O. Gaylord. To the Town Council of San Francisco..." is written on the back of the item. The use of the term "Memorial" is unusual, and at the top of the beginning of the text in pencil, appears the following: "Presented by Dr. Washington Ayer, Sept. 30th, 1893,"who most likely was the donor of the item.
