    Biography

    Eugene Allen is an American production designer and art director most active in film during the 1950s and 1960s. He is executive director emeritus of the Art Directors Guild. Allen served on the Academy Board of Governors throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and was president from 1983 to 1985. He was nominated three times in the art direction category and received an Academy Award for MY FAIR LADY (1964).

    Collection Scope and Content Summary

    The Gene Allen papers span the years circa 1930s-1990s and encompass circa 20 linear feet. The collection contains production drawings, storyboards with detailed shooting instructions, correspondence, and photographs. Allen's term as Academy President is covered, as well as his 27 years as executive director of the Art Directors Guild. There is extensive documentation of his unique working relationship with director George Cukor, which began with A STAR IS BORN (1954) and reached its high point with MY FAIR LADY.
