Abstract: This collection includes postcards that feature black and white images of ruins from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and
fire. The devastating earthquake occurred on April 18, 1906, and fires proceeded for the next several days. The impact of
the earthquake affected surrounding cities as well, with San Francisco's destruction being the most severe. Destroying the
city and taking many lives, this event remains one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the United States.
Scope and Contents
The San Francisco 1906 Earthquake Postcards Collection consists of 31 (unused) postcards that feature black and white photographs
of the ruins from the San Francisco earthquake and fire in 1906. Included are depictions of the aftermath of the disaster
in various locations of San Francisco: City Hall, Mission Street, Market Street, and other prominent buildings. There are
also two postcards that depict the ruins of the New Hotel in Santa Rosa, California as well as two postcards portraying the
impact on Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. Each postcard includes a caption with the date April 18, 1906.
