Biographical / Historical
UCLA's Department of Classics originated from a small department called "Classical Languages," formed in 1919 at UCLA's inception
and consisting of one professor, Arthur Patch McKinlay, and six courses. In 1922, Edwin Moore Rankin was the second professor
to join the department and courses in ancient Greek were added to the curriculum. By 1965, the faculty numbered twelve members
responsible for courses in Latin and Greek, with another six members responsible for Indo-European studies (Hungarian, Finnish,
Celtic, Irish, and the ancient languages of Sanskrit and Hittite); programs leading to the master and doctoral degrees were
also instituted.
