Description
Eleanor Klein received her Master's Degree in Social Work from USC in 1953 and held many positions as a social worker in Los Angeles thereafter. She held several positions within the local Southern California chapter of the American Association of Social Work as well as the local chapter of the National Association of Social Work. From 1974-1982 Eleanor Klein was Director of the Department of Clinical Social Work at the UCLA Medical Center. Papers in this collection include reports, meeting minutes, correspondence regarding various social work matters, and several folders dedicated to how social workers should provide prenatal care for women in the community.
Background
Eleanor Klein (1919-2012) was born in the Philippines to missionary parents. She received degrees from Glendale Union Academy (1937), Pacific Union College (1947) and received her Master's Degree in Social Work from USC in 1953. During her time as a worker in the Division of Social Welfare for the Southern California District of the American Association of Social Workers, she was chairman of the Professional Practices Committee. Throughout her career she also held various positions on the board of the National Medical Social Work Section of the local chapter of the National Association of Social Work, including ultimately becoming chairman of said Section in the 1950s. She worked in the Social Services Department of several Los Angeles area hospitals, including the University of California Medical Center, and White Memorial Hospital. From 1956-1982 she worked at the UCLA Medical Center. In 1974, Eleanor Klein was appointed as the Director of the Department of Clinical Social Work at the UCLA Medical Center and remained in that position until her retirement.
