Abstract: Lewis Engman served as a Special Assistant to the President in the Office of Consumer Affairs, Assistant Director of the Domestic Council, and Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission. His principle areas of concern were tax policy, housing, school finance, and trade regulation. The majority of the collection is the Subject File Series which documents Engman’s activities, correspondence, and involvement in policy issues relating to the Administrative Conference of the U.S., banking, consumerism, housing, and Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

These materials are in the custody of the National Archives and Records Administration under the provisions of Title I of the Presidential Recordings and Materials Preservation Act of 1974 (P.L. 93-526, 88 Stat. 1695) and implementing regulations.

The collection of Lewis Engman documents his activities and responsibilities as a White House Staff Member of the Office of Consumer Affairs, Assistant Director of the Domestic Council and Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission. His principal areas of concern were tax policy, housing, school finance and trade regulation. The Engman collection consists of two series, a Subject File Series and a Director's Review Series. The majority of the collection is the Subject File Series which documents Lewis Engman's activities, correspondence and involvement in policy issues relating to the Administrative Conference of the U.S., banking, consumerism, housing and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and taxation pertaining to school finance. This series is indexed alphabetically. The Director's Review Series is a small series of budget reports for fiscal years 1973 and 1974 from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Department of Justice, Department of Commerce, and the Department of Treasury, prepared for the Director's Reviews. This series is indexed in chronological order.
