Organizational History

The California Wool Growers Association was organized on September 18, 1860, when fifty sheep ranchers gathered in the pavilion of the State Agricultural Society in Sacramento to address the concerns of West Coast sheep producers. The ranchers’ objectives were access to markets on the East Coast, to resist efforts to establish a monopoly in the wool market, and to foster better sheep breeding and wool quality. At the conclusion of the meeting eighteen ranchers became members of what was originally known as the California Sheep Raisers and Wool Growers Association.
The inaugural California Wool Growers Association (CWGA) officers included General Alfred Redington of Sacramento (president), Senator Thomas Flint of Monterey (vice president), and James E. Perkins of San Francisco (secretary). Early records of the CWGA from 1860 to 1906 are presumed to have been destroyed in the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire. The CWGA offices were based in various locations in San Francisco until 1946 when construction of their headquarters at 151 Mission Street commenced. The CWGA moved their headquarters to Sacramento in 1966.

Scope and Contents

Comprises photographs, negatives, slides, contact sheets, banquet camera photographs, transparencies, ephemera, correspondence, promotional materials, press releases, and newsletters collected by the California Wool Growers Association for use in publication or possible publication in the association's journal California Livestock News. The collection includes images from the early 1900s to the mid-1980s, although the bulk of the photographs are from the 1950s through 1970s. Photographs depict the promotion of the wool and sheep industries and the marketing of lamb meat and wool. Also includes images of various cattle and sheep breeds, sheep ranchers, California Wool Growers Association members, agricultural professionals, and livestock shows and sales.
The photographs and other materials were collected to accompany articles in California Livestock News which kept CWGA members informed of the various issues, events, and happenings in the sheep and wool industries. The photographs are a mix of professional photography and photographs taken by CWGA members and associates. The collection covers many issues affecting the sheep industry including livestock disease, predator damage and control, and brush management.
The photograph collection demonstrates CWGA’s outreach and connection with their members and auxiliary associations such as the American Lamb Council, the 4-H Club, and Future Farmers of America. It also captures important agricultural events such as the California Ram Sale (1951-1985) and the Grand National Livestock Exposition (1928-1984) and illustrates the CWGA’s creative promotional events such as Miss Wool California, Miss Wool America, and Make It Yourself with Wool contests.
