[Identification of Item], Bay Area Black Panther Party collection, CEMA 56. Department of Special Research Collections, UC Santa Barbara Library, University of California, Santa Barbara.

Scope and Content

The collection includes documents, small flyers, handbills, collected research, publications, and newspaper and magazine articles, and ephemera related to the Bay Area Black Panther Party. There are seven series: Organizational Papers, Subject Files, Publications, Magazine and Newspaper Articles, Oversize, Newspapers, and Black Panther Party Buttons; each series is arranged either by chronological or alphabetical order according to original titles or dates.
Series I: Organizational Papers, 1972-1995. Series I includes a wide variety of documents created by and related to the Black Panther Party. Of particular interest are the bulk campaign flyers for Huey Newton, Bobby Seale and Eldridge Cleaver and the intake application for membership in the Black Panther Party.
Series II: Subject Files, 1962-1995. Series II is an excellent example of the types of subject files that the Party was gathering during the 1960's and 1970's concerning various other civil rights groups and activists. Included here is also a small collection of papers and drafts concerning various civil rights issues.
Series III: Publications, 1963-2000. Series III includes an outstanding collection of first volume publications of significant titles such as The Black Panther, Black Politics, Black Power!, The Commemorator, and Free Huey.
Series IV: Magazine and Newspaper Articles, 1966-1998. Series contains a collection of articles pertaining to a wide variety of topics related to the Party. In particular, there is a large collection of articles for 1989, the year Huey Newton was assassinated. There are additionally a number of articles about early Panther activity in Oakland and the Bay Area as well as on the University of California campus. This is also a rich source of information on Eldridge Cleaver as there are both articles written by and about him in the collection.
Series V: Oversize. There are a few other oversize materials (other than publications and article clippings) that are too large to be included in legal size archival boxes and have been moved from their original series and placed in a flat box for preservation purpose. If an item has been removed from its original series and placed in oversize, a note indicating its location in oversize has been left in the original place of the item.
Series VI: Newspapers. The Black Panther Intercommunal News Service from February 20th 1971 to February 5th 1972.
Series VII: Black Panther Party Buttons. Ten Bay Area Black Panther Party buttons.

Arrangement

There are seven series: Organizational Papers, Subject Files, Publications, Magazine and Newspaper Articles, Oversize, Newspapers, and Black Panther Party Buttons; series are arranged either by chronological or alphabetical order according to original titles or dates.
