Thomas Gates was born in Canada on 1833 January 8, to Hiram Gates and Sarah Maria Sayles. He later married Maria Emilie Prudhomme.
He passed away on 1896 March 13, in Yuma, Arizona Territory.
"1896, March 19. A Yuma dispatch to the Star announces that Thomas Gates, superintendent of the Territorial prison, committed
suicide March 13 by shooting himself through the head. Despondence occasioned by continued ill health is supposed to be the
cause. Gates was a pioneer of Arizona, coming to Tucson from Los Angeles in 1874. He had served in the Territorial legislature
and before in the position of superintendent of the prison. He was 61 years of age. He leaves no family. His body will be
taken to Los Angles for interment. Mr. Gates management of prison affairs was the most succssful in the history of that institution."
