Abstract: This collection consists of a letterpress book belonging to Charles H. Bartholomew, Post Master General for San Diego, containing
administrative correspondence dating from December 1915 through November 1916.

Biographical / Historical Notes
Charles H. Bartholomew was born in 1867 in Unadilla, New York and first came to San Diego in 1888. Upon arriving in San Diego
he worked as a grape picker in El Cajon and eventually joined the Post Office as an Assistant Postal Clerk. In 1908, he was
appointed Postmaster and held the post until his retirement in 1917. Bartholomew was also active in several civic projects
including the Panama-California Exposition and the further development of Balboa Park. In 1917, he ran an unsuccessful mayoral
campaign against George Marston.
Arrangement
The collection is a single volume with an index at the front. The documents in the body of the book are arranged chronologically
on numbered pages.

Scope and Content
The collection consists of a letterpress book containing copies of letters and other various records from December 1915 through
November 1916. An alphabetical index is at the front of the book. The letters record various administrative subjects such
as mail classification issues, circulation handling, appointment and promotions and other human resources matters.
