Scope and Content of Collection

Collection contains ten pocket diaries by Mr. and Mrs. Henry W. Fattey of Erie Co., NY, and their son LeRoy, who writes while in the Philippines, 1904-1913. Several diaries detail LeRoy's around-the-world journey across Europe, to home in New York, across the United States, and back to the Philippines.

LeRoy travels cross-country to San Francisco and continues by boat via Hawaii and Japan to the Philippines. Through the Bureau of Agriculture, LeRoy does farm work in La Carlota and other towns, going on numerous trips around the islands.

LeRoy takes a trip by steamer through Hong Kong, Singapore (China), Penang (Malaysia), Colombo (Ceylon, now Sri Lanka), Aden (Yemen), Suez Canal to Port Said (Egypt), and Naples (Italy). He then continues by land to Rome, Venice (Italy), Lucerne (Switzerland), Munich, Mainz, Cologne (Germany), Paris (France), London, Southampton (England), then by steamer to New York. He briefly visits family in New York before continuing cross-country again to San Francisco to return to the Philippines by boat. He pauses only briefly in Manila before continuing to Taipei (Formosa, now Taiwan), Shanghai (China), Moji, Kobe, Yokohama (Japan), then Victoria (Canada), Seattle, Vancouver (Washington), Toronto (Canada), and finally back to New York.

Discusses social events in Manila, then drops off at journey described in other 1908 diary. Description resumes in October, with LeRoy back in the Philippines, mainly detailing the comings and goings of other people.

Additional Note

First half describes the comings and goings of his acquaintances. In second half LeRoy travels by ship to via China, Taiwan and Japan to Victoria (Canada), Seattle (Washington), then by train to Toronto (Canada) then Buffalo (New York). He remains in New York visiting family for several months, then journeys by train to Dallas (Texas), where he gets a job in a packing room for a month. He then continues on to San Francisco where he sails to Honolulu (Hawaii).

Additional Note

Picks up where previous diary left off with LeRoy arriving in Yokohama (Japan) and continuing on to the Philippines. Remainder of diary contains similar details as previous ones, with description of the comings and goings of LeRoy's acquaintances.
