Performances, projects, and exhibitions, Series I. 1972-2013, undated

Arrangement

Arranged alphabetically by performance location, performance title, or artificial grouping. Unidentified and miscellaneous materials are filed at the end of the series.

Scope and Contents

Series I. contains audiovisual materials, photographic materials, and papers documenting live performances and performances-for-camera by the Kipper Kids in Buffalo and New York, New York; Glasgow, Scotland; Innsbruck, Austria; London, England; Los Angeles, California; Paris, France; and other locations.
Kipper Kids' performances feature Brian Routh and Martin von Haselberg as doppelgängers in costumes and greasepaint makeup with prosthetic noses and chins. Both performers participate as the character Harry Kipper in balloon ceremonies, boxing ceremonies, food ceremonies, tea ceremonies, and wank ceremonies—all of which can be described as anti-aesthetic, with significant use of food and/or paint and repeated acts of self-abuse.
Performance venues include Barnsdall Park Theatre, Galerie Krinzinger, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art, The Kitchen, Whisky a Go-Go, and Whitechapel Gallery.
Also present are materials relating to multiple projects for television: K.O. Kippers (Cinemax), Mum's Magic Mulch (HBO), and a pilot for an unrealized television series.
Included are marketing materials (chiefly performance fliers) and printed matter (chiefly press clippings) relating to the Kipper Kids' live performances and projects for television. Also relating to performances are three notebooks containing show descriptions and prop lists, as well as three performance descriptions and/or proposals.
Generally, the Kipper Kids did not title their performances. Arbitrary titles such as Your Turn to Roll It (followed by a number) were occasionally used as placeholders.
Series I. includes one audiocassette, 11 audiotape reels, two film reels, five optical discs, and 107 videocassettes.

K.O. Kippers (1988) was directed by Miroslav Janek and produced by Kipper Productions. The film follows Harry and Harry Kipper in South America as they train for a boxing match staged by their manager, scam-artist Tony LaRosa (played by Joe Spinelli).

Series IV. contains digital scans of letters from Brian Routh to Martin von Haselberg in which Routh considers performing again as the Kipper Kids. A 2004 email is the last dated message and possibly the pair's final communication with each other.
Also present are four incoming letters to the Kipper Kids or von Haselberg, museum loan agreements, and paperwork for registration of the Kipper Kids as a business in the United Kingdom.

Scope and Contents

Approximately 17 letters, five postcards, and one email from Routh to von Haselberg.
Routh chiefly writes of his thoughts on the Kipper Kids performing together again; while initially in support of new projects, he ultimately decides against rejoining von Haselberg and cuts off communication completely in a 2004 email.
