Biographical/Historical note

Stiles Oliver Clements was born in Centerville, Maryland on March 2, 1883. He studied architecture at the Drexel Institute of Technology, where he earned a bachelor’s degree. Clements went on to study architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned his master’s degree. After receiving his master’s degree, Clements completed coursework at the Ecole des Beaux- Arts in Paris. In 1911 he moved to Los Angeles, California and became a partner in the firm Morgan, Walls, Morgan and Clements, Architects circa 1923. In 1937, Clements began his own architectural practice based in Los Angeles, until 1955 when his son Robert O. Clements joined the partnership. Stiles O. and Robert O. Clements, Architects was a firm for ten years, until 1965 when Stiles O. Clements retired. Stiles Oliver Clements died in 1966.

Scope and Content note

The Stiles O. Clements drawings of the Coulter Dry Goods Co. Department Store consist of five reprographic copies of architectural drawings. Drawings include: plot plan, floor plan for first floor, elevations, and cross section drawings. Drawings are from 1937-1938.
