Description
John Kentfield and Company records (SAFR 18867, HDC 519) include accounting documents, receipts and bills of lading that are
dated from 1862 to 1876. The collection is available for research use without restriction.
Background
John Kentfield, a native of New York State, came to California in 1849 and established a shipping firm that flourished in
the 1870s and 1880s. Among his other business interests was the supplying of redwood lumber throughout Northern California.
His partners included Charles Nelson, Hans H. Buhne, and D.R. Jones. His son, Edward Elston Kentfield, ran the company after
John Kentfield's death.
