This collection consists of materials related to a survey about hunger in San Diego carried out by the Hunger Survey Committee of the San Diego Hunger Coalition in 1983, in an attempt to quantify the total number of hungry people in the County. These materials include completed anonymous survey forms from a large number of zip codes in San Diego County, which asks individuals about their ability to buy food, how the economy affects their food-buying habits, and which gathers income, employment, age, and racial data.
The materials also include tally sheets, completed survey forms mailed to religious, humanitarian, and civic organizations providing free food to individuals, and the final report of the committee, which discusses the attempt to trace pockets of hunger in the county by geographical location.

Historical Note

The San Diego Hunger Coalition is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving access to and participation in federal food programs, such as food stamps and school lunch programs. The Coalition educates and advocates about hunger issues at the local, state, and national levels, with the goal of alleviating hunger in San Diego County. In 1983 the Coalition created the Hunger Survey Committee, which attempted to quantify the total number of hungry persons in San Diego County. They did so by asking people at a local soup kitchen to fill out surveys, surveying door-to-door in all neighborhoods and communities in the county, and mailing surveys to food providing agencies in the county.
