    Biographical Note

    Donald Webster Cory (1913-1986, also known as Donald Sagarin) wrote The Homosexual in America (1951), a book regarded as one of the primary influences on the early gay rights movement. In the early 1950s, Cory also operated the mail-order Cory Book Service, which marketed books of interest to the gay and lesbian community. Later in his life, he became critical of, and was in turn repudiated by, the gay and lesbian movement.

    Scope and Content

    Correspondence, clippings, articles, legal documents, publicity, notes, and a dissertation excerpt documenting the literary activity of author and early gay rights advocate Donald Sagarin, who wrote under the pseudonym Donald Webster Cory in the 1950s. Cory was the author of the book The Homosexual in America (1951); he later became critical of, and was in turn repudiated by, the gay movement. The collection includes correspondence with Harry Hay in 1952.
