Biography
Charles Camp was born in Jamestown, North Dakota on March 12, 1893 to Theodosia Baird Camp and Edgar Whittlesey Camp, a prominent
attorney. Several years later, the Camp family moved to Southern California and Charles Camp attended Throop Polytechnic Institute
in Pasadena, California. He earned his A.B. in 1915 at the University of California, Berkeley and his Ph.D. in 1923 from Columbia
University. His doctoral work was interrupted from 1917 to 1919 by active service with the United States Army in France. Camp
joined the University of California, Berkeley faculty as a zoologist in 1922. He transferred to the Paleontology Department
in 1930, and he directed the museum of Paleontology from 1930 until 1949. Camp retired from teaching in 1960.
Camp was also a dedicated historian of the American West. He edited and published the journals of frontiersmen James Clyman
and George C. Yount and three times revised Henry R. Wagner's bibliography
The Plains and the Rockies. Camp was an important figure in the California Historical Society and a founding member of the Friends of the Bancroft Library.
Charles Camp died on Aug. 14, 1975.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of personal and professional correspondence, writings and notes, teaching materials, other professional
files, subject files, personal materials, clippings. Some of the materials relate to Camp's paleontology work and others to
his work in Western American history.
