Description
Correspondence between the Chilean family of Julian and Petra Pillot, while living in California.
Background
Several members of the Chilean Pillot family came to California during the Gold Rush. Julian Pillot was born in France but moved to Chile around 1833, where he married Petra Silva. Julian Pillot arrived in San Francisco in March 1849. By 1855 Petra had joined her husband in San Jose, California. Julian Pillot died in May 1859. In 1860, Adolph and Antonio, two of Julian and Petra's sons, moved to Guadalupe, California and worked in a grocery store.
