Abstract: The Brand Library & Art Center is the art and music section of the Glendale Library, Arts & Culture Department and features
a large professional gallery space (the Brand Library Art Galleries) and concert hall. The Brand Library & Art Center has
presented hundreds of exhibitions since 1963, including the Brand Annual Juried exhibitions co-sponsored by the Associates
of Brand Library & Art Center. The archival collection includes promotional material, exhibition catalogs, correspondence,
newspaper clippings, contracts and condition reports, photographs and slides of artists’ work and gallery installations, artists’
biographical information, and other supplemental materials related to the gallery’s administration and exhibitions.

Biography/Administrative History
The contents of the Brand Library Art Galleries Archival Collection has been accumulated and organized by gallery and library
staff since 1963. Chronologically ordered file folders became the de facto arrangement. File folders are housed in metal filing
cabinets. In 2013, MLIS candidate Diane Lorraine Garcia processed the archive through 1990. She inventoried and documented
the archive contents and undertook preservation efforts, including the removal of metal paperclips and staples, separating
newspaper clippings, and properly housing slides, negatives and photographs. She also authored this finding aid for inclusion
in the Online Archive of California.
Scope and Content of Collection
The Brand Library opened to the public in 1956. Between 1956 and September 1969 exhibitions were held in the library solarium
and in library display cases. Records from this period exist from 1963 through 1969. In 1969 a building addition that included
the Brand Library Art Galleries, a recital hall, and the Brand Studios was completed. The first exhibition in the new Brand
Library Art Galleries opened on October 5, 1969. Since that time Brand Library Art Galleries has hosted hundreds of group
and solo exhibitions with a focus on local and regional artists, as well as the Brand Annual Juried Exhibition co-sponsored
by the Associates of Brand Library. Exhibition content has been wide-ranging, including painting, ceramics, photography, sculpture,
video and immersive art experiences.
The Brand Library Art Galleries Archival Collection includes promotional flyers, invitations and posters, exhibition catalogs,
correspondence, newspaper clippings, contracts and condition reports, photographs and slides of artists’ work and gallery
installations, artists’ biographical information, and other supplemental materials related to the gallery’s administration
and exhibitions.
The collection consists of three series:
• Series 1: Brand Library & Art Center exhibitions, 1963-September 1969.
• Series 2: Brand Library Art Galleries exhibitions, October 1969-present.
• Series 3: Brand Library & Art Center Annual National Juried exhibitions, 1971-present.

Series 1 and Series 2 together are organized chronologically in file folders. Series 3 is separately organized chronologically
in file folders.
