Historical Note
Southwest Museum director Frederick Webb Hodge was inspired by H. H. Bancroft to collect dictated memoirs of pioneers for
the Bancroft Library in Berkeley, and reached out to the community for stories of families who were established in Early California.
Lecil E. Ross answered the call, donating family histories for his paternal grandfather, Jacob Ross, Sr., and his family in
California from 1865-1900 and for Lecil's maternal grandfather, George Lunsford Russell, who was a landowner in Los Angeles
County before Los Angeles was 100 years old. The Ross and Russell families settled near each other and eventually intermarried.
The Russell land was about a mile northeast of what is currently Santa Ana.
