John Muir (1838-1914) was a naturalist and philosopher, famous for calling attention to the natural lands of the United States
and spurring on the movement to develop the National Parks. He was a Scottish-born U.S. author, and early advocate of preservation
of wilderness in the United States. His letters, essays, and books telling of his adventures in nature, especially in the
Sierra Nevada mountains of California, have been read by millions. His activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia
National Park and other wilderness areas. The Sierra Club, which he founded, is now one of the largest conservation organizations
in the United States.
This collection spans from 1824-1966 and includes copies of John Muir's correspondence with Charles Fletcher Lummis from 1895-1912,
an original sketch of Muir by Eva Scott Fenyes, newspaper clippings of articles by or about John Muir, ephemera, and a copy
of Muir's journal documenting his time in the Yosemite Valley from 1869-1870. The journal copy appears to have been made by
Jeanne Carr, date unknown. This collection contains photostats of correspondence between Muir and Lummis, the originals of
which have been moved to MS.1 Charles Fletcher Lummis Manuscript Collection (MS.1.1.3221A and B).
