The Sara Castrejón photographs of Mexican revolutionaries collection was purchased by The Bancroft Library in 2017.

Biographical Note

Castrejón (1888-1962) was reputedly the first woman to photograph the Mexican Revolution. Born in Teloloapan, Guerrero; studied photography in Mexico City, possibly at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Mujeres; established a studio in Teloloapan at the beginning of the Mexican Revolution.

Scope and Content

Includes individual and group portraits of Mexican revolutionaries posing with rifles, bandoliers, sombreros, etc., some standing, others on horseback. Notable subjects include the Afro-Mexican soldadera Carmen Amelia Robles Ávila and General Federico Morales. In some images the photographer's portable backdrop is visible.
