Biographical Note

Fredric Mosher joined the University of California, Berkeley faculty in the School of Librarianship in 1950. His teaching focused on bibliography and reference work and he was broadly interested in the history of books, printing, publishing, and early forms of bibliographical description. His legacies include building a strong reference collection, including rare books, for teaching and doctoral research.

Content Description

The collection consists mostly of files relating to Mosher's work on the American printing of the revised edition of Lexikon des Gesamten Buchwesens, the leading encyclopedia on the history of books. Also included are project files relating to Mosher's doctoral dissertation on The Dial,, a research project on the Way and Williams publishing house in Chicago, and the 18th century printer John Haberkorn. The collection contains manuscripts and some reprints of Mosher's writings, professional files from his career at the University of California, Berkeley, files on book selection and intellectual freedom during the 1950s, and some correspondence.

Scope and Content

Mosher's files for a project on the publisher Way and Williams, a Chicago publishing house founded in 1895 by Washington Irving Way and Chauncey L. Williams. Included are research files, notes, transcriptions, a chronological file of clippings and other research material, and some correspondence.
