Biography / Administrative History

Born in Germany in 1902, Lucas Underwood earned his Doctorate at the University of Erlangen in 1927. He worked as a professor of Music Theory and Music History and as a music critic until he fled Nazi persecution in 1939. He joined College of the Pacific in 1946 as a Professor of Musicology. During his tenure he headed the graduate program in Music History and directed the Opera Theater until his retirement in 1972. A co-founder of the Stockton Opera Association, he was honored with the Stockton Arts Commission's STAR Award in 1990. He died on July 22, 1992.

This collection consists of original scores and arrangements by Lucas Underwood, some of his teaching materials, and 7 scrapbooks of photos, clippings, and programs.
