    Historical Note:

The Western Jewish Studies Association was started by Dr. Lawrence Baron of San Diego State University as an alternative to the Association for Jewish Studies. The Association for Jewish Studies at the time (1994) met once a year in Decemeber, in Boston, Massachusetts. For Jewish scholars in the Western United States it was a difficult time of year to travel and an expensive trip. The WJSA preseneted these scholars with a venue that was more convenient and less expensive, thus allowing a greater participation from the western part of the country.
