Scope and Contents

When the French army withdrew from Mexico in 1867, Maximilian garrisoned himself and his followers in Querétaro. After the city fell to republican troops he was captured and eventually executed by firing squad on June 19 in the Cerro de las Campanas. Although close access to the execution was not permitted, one of Franois Aubert's studio operatives photographed Maximilian's bullet-riddled clothing, Maximilian in his coffin, the members of the firing squad, and views of the execution site as well as views of Queretaro associated with Maximilian. Aubert, in accordance with the prevailing studio practices of the time, took credit for the photographs. The images circulated widely in cartes-de-visite bearing the imprint of numerous Mexican and European photographers.
