Background
- Scope and content:
-
This collection includes a typed copy of the Marine Corps Hymn in English, a copy of the Hymn translated into Navajo by Private First Class Jimmie K. King and a letter to Frederick Webb Hodge from Philip Johnston, dated 1943 March 1.
The letter is in reply to Hodge's request to print the translation in Southwest Museum's serial publication The Masterkey. Johnston writes, "A restricted order has recently come from the Commandant stating that all the publicity on the Navajos must be held down to an absolute minimum...until after the shooting stops, and at that time I am reasonably sure that permission for its printing will be easily maintained."
The translation was printed in the 1945 September issue of the The Masterkey.
