Field collection. Likely found in the desk of Richard Tooker, former San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park employee in the Historic Documents Department, after his retirement in 1995. A note on the folder in which the photographs were found states, "Not sure of these - many may be catalogued - Have Dick [Richard Tooker] check at his leisure. SH [Stephen Haller, former SFMNHP Curator of Historic Documents, 1986-1992]."

    Historical or Biographical Note

The wooden-hulled, three-masted schooner C.A. THAYER was built in 1895 at Hans D. Bendixsen's shipyard in Fairhaven, California. Originally designed to carry lumber, she also served in the Alaska salmon and codfishing industries. With her final codfishing voyage in 1950, C.A. THAYER became the last operating American commercial sailing vessel on the West Coast. She started her career as a museum vessel when she was purchased by State of California in 1957. Today she is preserved at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park as the last surviving example of a West Coast lumber schooner.
