Description
Materials related to Murray E. Fowler's career in zoological medicine at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.
Background
Dr. Murray E. Fowler joined the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 1958. His initial focus was on large animal surgery and equine medicine, expanding to non-domestic animal medicine in the late 1960s. Dr. Fowler became Chief of the Zoological Medicine Service, which was the first program of its kind anywhere in the world. He built relationships with local zoos and in 1974 created a joint residency training program in zoological medicine with the Sacramento Zoo. Dr. Fowler is the author of hundreds of scientific papers and twenty-seven textbooks, among them the Zoo and Wild Animal Medicine series. Dr. Fowler retired from UC Davis in 1991 and remained active in his field until his death in 2014.
