American Economic Foundation. Pamphlets 513280 1960

Historical note

Organized by Fred G. Clark in Cleveland, Ohio in 1939, the American Economic Foundation's goal was to promote the libertarian ideals of a free market and limited government. Clark moved the foundation to New York City in the 1940s, where it continued its education program to improve economic literacy and to demonstrate the virtues of the capitalist system in the U.S. The foundation's economic primer, "How We Live," sold 3 million copies in the 1940s and 1950s, and was used in adult education courses and schools to teach the economics of the marketplace. The organization continued to have a presence into the 1990s, but by 2003 had ceased to exist. [Adapted from The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History, http://ech.case.edu/cgi/article.pl?id=AEF]

American Nazi Party 510803

Historical note

The American Nazi Party (ANP) was an American political party founded by George Lincoln Rockwell and headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. Rockwell initially called it the World Union of Free Enterprise National Socialists (WUFENS), but later renamed it the American Nazi Party in 1960 in order to attract more media attention. The party was based largely upon the ideals and policies of Adolf Hitler's National Socialist German Worker's Party in Germany during the Third Reich, but it also expressed allegiance to the Constitutional principles of the American Founding Fathers. It also espoused Holocaust denial. Rockwell began to experience some financial success with paid speaking engagements at universities where he was invited to express his controversial views as exercises in free speech. He subsequently recast the group as a legitimate political party by toning down the verbal and written attacks against non-whites, replacing the party rallying cry of "Sieg Heil!" with "White Power!", limiting public display of the swastika, and entering candidates in local elections. On January 1, 1967 Rockwell renamed the ANP to the National Socialist White People's Party (NSWPP), a move that alienated some hard-line members. Before he could fully implement party reforms, Rockwell was assassinated on August 25, 1967 by a disgruntled follower. [Adapted from Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Nazi_Party]

White Aryan Resistance (WAR) flyers 516014 1980s

Scope and Content

5 black and white flyers printed for the Concord, California sect of the White Aryan Resistance (W.A.R.). They depict anti-Semitic propaganda with pictures of white students, guns, and swastikas, and phrases such as "get out Jew while you can".

Historical note

The W.A.R. was founded by former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard Tom Metzger. It grew out of an earlier organization founded by Metzger, the White American Political Association, which was dedicated to promoting "prowhite" candidates for political office. After losing the 1982 California Senate Democratic primary, Metzger abandoned his electoral ambitions and reorganized WAPA as White American Resistance in 1983, subsequently renamed White Aryan Resistance, to reflect a more "revolutionary" stance. The new organization used a wide range of propaganda techniques, including a controversal television program, "Race and Reason", to transmit its white supremacist ideas.
