Bookplate Collection, 1930-1979, Autry Museum of the American West, Los Angeles; MS.517; [folder number] [folder title][date].
The collection is arranged in three series, Series I. Charles Fletcher Lummis bookplates, Series II. Southwest Museum bookplates
and stamp samples, and Series III. Miscellaneous Bookplates. The items are arranged alphabetically by name or organization
printed on the plate or by material type.
The collection consists of 82 bookplates that vary in styles and colors. There are bookplates for the Southwest Museum's Library
collections (which became the Braun Research Library in 1979); Charles Fletcher Lummis' personal bookplates; and various personal
and organizational bookplates. Also included are original printing plates, notes, and images. A majority of the collection
consists of bookplates, however there are 2 sheets stamped with various Southwest Museum and library collections labels.
It is presumed that the collection was started around the 1930s, based on Hodge correspondence held in MS.3 Southwest Museum
Institutional Archives. The latest date recorded is based on the Braun Research Library bookplate, which was printed no sooner
than 1979. However, this collection is open and can be added to.
Creation of original inventory is unknown, probably done by museum or library staff. Revised by Liza Posas, 2007. Additional
processing of collection and publication of finding aid made possible by a grant from the National Historical Publications
and Records Commission (NHPRC).
