Abstract: Dr. Lyman A. Brewer (1818-1876) was a Union soldier during the Civil War, and medical officer for the Spotted Tail and the
Red Cloud agencies in Dakota Territory from 1874 to 1876. This collection of papers on Lyman A. Brewer includes photocopies
of biographical data; letters and notes from 1874 November 28-1876 April 14, and typed transcriptions articles, journal entries,
and family correspondence from 1864 to 1865.

Biographical Note
Dr. Lyman A. Brewer (1818-1876) served in the Ohio regiments during the Civil War, contracted spotted fever, and was eventually
advised to go West for his health. Brewer served as medical officer for the Spotted Tail and the Red Cloud agencies in Dakota
Territory, writing letters to his family from there in the period from 20 Sept 1874 through 14 April 1876.

Lyman A Brewer IV of South Pasadena permitted the Southwest Museum to photocopy this correspondence during 1983 September.

This collection of papers on Lyman A. Brewer includes photocopies of biographical data; letters and notes sent from Dakota
Territory, from 1874 November 28 - 1876 April 14, typewritten transcriptions created by Mrs. Lyman A. Brewer III, the mother
of the donor; typed transcriptions of an article and a journal entry which were not included with the original donation; and
typed transcriptions of 25 letters to family and friends from 1864 January 24 - 1865 June 13, transcriber unknown.
