Administrative History
The Meridian Gallery was a non-profit exhibition and performance space in San Francisco, California that showcased innovative
music, performances, lectures and visual arts. The gallery grew out of the Society for Art Publications of the Americas (SAPA),
which was founded in 1985 by Anne Brodzky and Anthony Williams. In 1989 the Meridian Gallery moved into its own space near
Union Square in San Francisco, California. After dealing with escalating rents the gallery briefly moved to the Presidio before
ending operations in 2017.
The Meridian Gallery sought to promote an understanding of the arts and culture and the value of diversity in contemporary
culture. The Meridian Gallery sponsored a series of monthly performances called Composers in Performance. The Meridian Gallery
also ran the Meridian Interns Program, a paid internship for low-income teens where artist instructors taught art workshops
and job-related training. The Interns would showcase their artwork in annual exhibitions.
The Society for Arts Publication of the Americas, was a quarterly arts review focused on the Americas.
