Biographical / Historical

The San José State University (SJSU) College of Education (COE) Alumni Board is dedicated to supporting its alumni and faculty and staff. This support is made possible by activities, events, and fundraisers. The Board is comprised of 19 people, which includes alumni and current faculty members. As of 2015, the Board's officers are President Bob Lowry; President-Elect Leah Gilmore; Past-President Peggy Anastasia; Secretary Cherie Donahue; and Treasurer Bob Pedretti. The Board's primary project is the "Honored Teacher" program, which takes place at the "Santa Ana One-Room Schoolhouse" at Kelley Park in San Jose, California. The Board offers annual scholarships to students and research grants to faculty members. In 1998, the Board implemented the "Honored Teacher" and "One Room Schoolhouse" programs. "Honored Teacher" gives former students and professional colleagues opportunities to acknowledge teachers who have made important differences in their lives and institutions. The honored teachers have taught classes across the spectrum of kindergarten through twelfth grade. The One-Room Schoolhouse was originally located in Santa Ana Valley in San Benito County. Grades 1-8 were taught at the school from 1872-1974. The Tavares Family of Hollister donated the house to the Connie L. Lurie College of Education Alumni Association. On September 26, 1998, the Schoolhouse opened at Kelly Park. The Schoolhouse represents the early history of education and serves as a symbol of the educational traditions of the late 19th century.
