Abstract: This collection contains documents relating to Edwin Clarence Norton, the first Dean of Pomona college. Norton served as Dean
from 1893 until his retirement in 1926, but was active at the college since 1888. These papers contain autobiographical materials,
speeches, correspondence, and other materials relating to Norton's life and especially his time at Pomona College and in the
Claremont area.

This collection was minimally processed, with all materials kept in their original order. Items were rehoused in archival
folders and boxes. Materials too large for a standard folder, such as journals and magazines, were placed in their own document
boxes.
Biographical / Historical
Edwin Clarence Norton has the distinction of serving as the first Dean of Pomona College, a position he held from 1893 until
his retirement from the school in 1926. Norton first came to Pomona College in 1888 as a professor of Greek and the principal
of the Preparatory Department. A graduate of Amhearst College and Yale University, Norton stayed in touch with his fellow
graduates, corresponding often. Norton's memory is honored through Pomona College's 'Edwin Clarence Norton Professor of Classics'
faculty position.
Scope and Contents
This collection contains autobiographical and biographical notes, correspondence written as Dean of Pomona College, speeches
and addresses given by Norton, photographs, correspondence by and about his Amhearst colleagues, and various clippings. Notable
materials include a handwritten geneology for the Norton family that traces back to the time of William the Conqueror,and
Norton's autobiography.
