Biographical

In 1994, Dr. Armando Arias was called to serve as a key strategist and member of the transformation and start-up team that created California State University, Monterey Bay campus on the site of the former Fort Ord military installation. He served as the Founding Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Founding Dean of the Social & Behavioral Sciences and Founding Dean of Arts Humanities & Creative Technologies. He currently serves on the faculty of the Division of Social, Behavioral & Global Studies.

Scope and Contents

This collection documents Dr. Armando Arias' involvement in the founding and development of California State University, Monterey Bay, as well as his role as the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Dean of Arts Humanities and Creative Technologies during 1994 to 1999. This material consists almost exclusively of subject files Dr. Arias maintained during this time, but also includes published reports, catalogs, and binders.
The collection includes materials from other CSU campuses used as reference during the planning of CSUMB. It also includes correspondence related to the development of the university's structural organization, academic programs, and curriculum; faculty-related files; memos, correspondence, and reports from the CSU Chancellor's Office and Board of Trustees; materials from meetings and conferences; documents related to research and collaboration with various organizations and regional colleges; and administrative files.

Processing Information

In order to facilitate access, the collection was minimally processed. Most dates are approximate. Materials were rehoused in new folders and removed from binders. The original labeling (but not necessarily original order) of files and binders was maintained during rehousing. The materials were originally housed in boxes that were labeled with broad topical titles (e.g., academic programs and policies, faculty-related files, binders), and these groupings were used in part when organizing the materials into series. For ease of access, subject files have been arranged alphabetcally. In some cases, the contents of individual files have been divided into a number of sub-files, based on content; many of the files contained unrelated or loosely related materials.
