    Historical or Biographical Note

    Joseph M. McBride served as the Chief Engineer aboard eight different vessels of the U.S. merchant fleet during and immediately after World War II.
    From December 1940 until May 1941 McBride served on the USAT HENRY ALLEN (APA-15) (built 1920, Harris class attack transport), from July to August 1942 on the USAT MAUI (built 1917, troop transport), in October 1942 on the troop transport USAT ERNEST HINDS, formerly the SANTA TERESA (built 1918, passenger liner), and from November 1942 to April 1945 he served his longest tour onboard the USAT HOWELL COBB (533) (built 1943, liberty ship). In February 1946, he served on the USAT U.S. GRANT (AP-29), formerly the KONIG WILHELM II, (Built 1907, troop transport), from February to September 1946 he served on the USAT FRED C. AINSWORTH (T-AP-181) (built 1943, troop transport), from October 1946 until May 1947 he served on the USAT GENERAL A.W. GREELEY (AP-141) (built 1944, troop transport) and in November 1947 he served on the USAT GENERAL W.G. HAHN (AP-158) (built 1945, troop transport). As the highest ranking officer in the engineering departments of these ships McBride maintained a collection of publications, logs and training material, and also wrote repair requests and filled out requisition paperwork.

    Collection Scope and Content

    The Joseph M. McBride papers (SAFR 18577, HDC 0529) consists of reference materials and papers generated or collected by McBride while working as the Chief Engineer aboard eight different USAT ships from aproximately 1940 to 1947.
    The collection includes lists of engineering discrepencies for repair, correspondence and directions to his subordinate engineers, personal papers and medical information, notes used for training crewmembers, blank forms used for routine watchstanding use, blank log forms, and requisition forms.The collection also includes large drawings of engine room piping and machinery layouts of Liberty Ships built at the Permanente Shipyards in Richmond, California from 1940 through 1944.
