Description
The George F. Gruner photograph collection, 1906-1931, 1940-1941, (SAFR 24264, P03-014) consists mainly of photographs of the California coastal steamships YALE (built 1906; passenger vessel) and HARVARD (built 1907; passenger vessel). The collection has been processed to the Collection level and is open for use.
Background
George F. Gruner (1925- ) was a journalist for forty-six years, thirty-three of which were with the Fresno Bee of Fresno, California. He previously worked at the Oakland Tribune of Oakland, California, and the European edition of the U.S. armed forces newspaper The Stars and Stripes. After retiring in 1988, he authored the books "Blue Water Beat: The Two Lives of the Battleship USS California" (1996) and "The White Flyers: Harvard and Yale: American Coastwise Travel" (2002).
