    Biography

    Dorothy McGuire was an American actress active in film from 1943 to 1973. Prior to her career in Hollywood, she appeared on stage and on the radio. Her husband was the still photographer, John Swope. McGuire was nominated for an Academy Award in the best actress category for GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT (1947).

    Collection Scope and Content Summary

    The Dorothy McGuire papers span the years 1930-1997 and encompass 7.5 linear feet. The collection includes production files with scripts, call sheets, or clippings on nearly two dozen films in which McGuire appeared. The television files contain some scripts and miscellaneous production material, including call sheets and press releases, for a dozen programs. The stage files contain scripts, programs, and clippings documenting some three-dozen plays. There is a smattering of correspondence throughout the production, television, and stage files. The subject files contain files on awards, miscellaneous clippings and periodicals, correspondence, and programs. Of interest is a color pencil drawing of McGuire by Mary "Topo" Swope. Four scrapbooks contain clippings, photographs, correspondence, programs, and memorabilia. There are photographs that document McGuire's film, television, and stage careers. A small amount of material relates to McGuire's husband, John Swope.
