Abstract: The collection contains portraits of 91 gay men and lesbians who are literary figures, community activists, and performing
artists. Some portraits were chosen on the basis of the subjects' connection to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Biographical note
Robert Giard (1939-2002) was a photographer based in Amagansett, N.Y. He began photographing gay and lesbian literary figures
in 1985. The archives of his project includes over 500 images, some of which have been exhibited at the San Francisco and
New York Public Libraries and many other venues. For further information on Robert Giard, please see the website of The Robert

Scope and Contents
The collection contains portraits of 91 gay men and lesbians who are literary figures, community activists, and performing
artists. Some portraits were chosen on the basis of the subjects' connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. Several of these
images are reproduced in
Particular Voices: Portraits of Gay and Lesbian Writers (MIT Press, ©1997). All photographs were printed by Robert Giard with the exception of Sherry Thomas and the self-portrait
which were printed by the estate in 2003.
