Abstract: More than 170 original oral history audiocassettes of interviews recorded with 125 identified cultural and political leaders
of Santa Barbara of that day. Collection also includes other historical tapes, research notes, photographs, interviews, clippings
and subject files.
Physical Location: A portion of the collection is located at the Southern Regional Library Facility (SRLF).

The collection is open for research. A portion of the collection is stored offsite. Advance notice is required for retrieval.

Historical Note
The "Santa Barbara Oral History Office UCSB, from the late 70s to early 80s", was carried out by Dr. Marian A. Johnson, who
served as a community oral historian at the University, based at the Santa Barbara Historical Society, then the Hutchins Center,
UCSB, later at UCSB Library, where most of this work was done. The project was halted when Dr. Marian Johnson moved to a professorship
in Utah in the spring of 1984.
Scope and Content
More than 170 original oral history audiocassettes of interviews recorded with 125 identified cultural and political leaders
of Santa Barbara. The collection also contains other historical tapes, research notes, photographs, interviews, clippings
and subject files. Many of the interviews have tape indexes in their folders. Includes many release forms and alphabetical
forms listing names of persons to interview. The list of interviewees is a "kind of crème de la crème of the Santa Barbara
elite of the time."
