    Collection Scope and Content

Ledger and scrapbook, 1876-1881, 1898-1931 (SAFR 23108, HDC 1636) is a single volume used as cash account book by George F. Hoeffer and used by Johnson as a maritime scrapbook largely containing newspaper clippings from the turn of the century of ship etchings and engravings. The collection has been processed to the file unit level and is open for use without restrictions.
The ledger, which was bound in Chicago, was originally used by Hoeffer for his cash accounts from 1876-1881. It is unknown how the book came to be used as a scrapbook by Earle B. Johnson. The clippings pasted in the first half of the scrapbook date from 1898 to WWI. A separate folder houses loose clippings that date to 1931. Most of the newspaper clippings are of paintings by William A. Coulter, a noted maritime artist. The second half of the book is comprised of Hoeffer's accounts, as well as handwritten ciphers and their keys presumably created by Johnson.

    Collection Arrangement

Collection is housed in one flat box for the scrapbook and the legal-size folder of loose clippings.
