Biographical / Historical

The collection was purchased by an antiquarian book seller in 2013 with additional purchases from various booksellers in later years. The collection is comprised of materials surrounding Punk music and lifestyle, mainly from the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. The punk scene began to emerge in the United States around the mid- 1970s. Over time, there has been a wider variety and range of punk subgroups. Most punk groups are considered to be anti- establishment and questioning of authoritative powers. The punk scene has developed a specific form of music and artwork, which can be seen throughout the collection.

Scope and Contents

The collection is mainly comprised of Punk flyers advertising venues and times for performances of punk bands. These flyers display unique art with dramatic designs representative of the punk movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Flyers advertise for well-known bands, such as U2, The Talking Heads, The Dead Kennedy’s, and local bands. The flyers also have a variety of venues that were integral to the Punk movements, such a Mabohay and On Broadway. The collection contains flyers from both San Francisco and Rancho Cucamonga. The collection also depicts later forms of the punk movement, with zines from 1983-2011 of MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL, a not-for-profit monthly zine, which depicts the punk lifestyle across the United States and the world. A newsletter is included in the collection, asking for punks to peacefully resist police brutality.
