Scope and Contents

The Joyce and Leon Nower papers document the formation of the San Diego State University Women's Studies Program and free speech activism in San Diego late 1960s and early 1970s. The papers traces curriculum development for the women's studies courses and document the Nower's committment to supporting women's rights and black communities. The files also contain information about projects advocating the formation of one of the first women's shelter for survivors of domestic violence in San Diego. The papers are arranged in two series: Series I. Subject Files and Series II. Teaching Materials.
Series I: Subject Files This series contains files relating to Joyce and Leon's activism and scholarly endeavors. It is arranged alphabetically.
Series II: Teaching Materials This series contains course material from the foundations of the Women's Studies Department at SDSU. It consists of syllabus and research materials for curriculum for beginning women's history and bibliography. It is arranged by course title and covers from 1970-1975.

This collection is open for research.  A large majority of the collection was separated and cataloged or placed in the Radical Ephemera and Underground Publications Collection, 1966-1983.
