Acquisition Information

SAFR-00001
The negative was owned by Neil Malloch and donated by him to the National Maritime Museum at San Francisco's Photograph Department in 1979. The photograph was accessioned by Golden Gate National Recreation Area as blanket accession of the historic photographs from the Photograph Department (GOGA-789) in 1985 and subsequently transferred to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park as part of a blanket accession (SAFR-1) in 1988.

Historical or Biographical Note

Maggie Baylis was a noted San Francisco landscape architect from the 1940s to 1971. After her husband's death, she began writing and illustrating several books on gardening and landscaping, including House Plants for the Purple Thumb (1973) and appeared on radio and television. She died on December 10, 1997.

The shot was taken out of a window in war time by Maggie Baylis from Alta Street (originally this was documented as taken from Gerke Alley) on Telegraph Hill. At the time, Ms. Baylis was experimenting with photography and trying for a certain affect when she took the photograph.
