Biography/Administrative History

The history of the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine dates back to the founding of the Toland Medical College in 1864. In 1873 it began its affiliation with the University of California campus in Berkeley. The Parnassus campus location opened in 1898. Dr. Robert Langley Porter, a renowned pediatrician, graduated in 1896 from Cooper Medical College in San Francisco. He traveled extensively in Europe and studied in London. Returning to San Francisco, he became one of the city's first pediatricians with a successful practice. He joined the University of California faculty in 1918, becoming a lecturer in pediatrics. In 1927 Dr. Porter was called from a European tour to become dean of the UC School of Medicine by University President W. W. Campbell. He retired from the deanship in 1940 at the age of seventy. He died at the age of ninety-five in 1965.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection contains papers, two sound tape reels, and one U-matic videocassette relating to UCSF campus events including: recordings of the memorial tribute to Dr. Robert Langley Porter (1870-1965), professor of pediatrics, emeritus and former dean of the School of Medicine. October 28, 1965; recordings of the dedication ceremony of the John B. de C.M. and Alison Saunders Courtyard, October 28, 1974; and footage of Dr. Sooy Memorial Service, November 3, 1986.
