Collection Description

This collection consists of photographs, most of which bear the stamp of the United States Army Signal Corps, and some textual material concerning United States Army troops on the Western Front during World War I. Many also bear captions typewritten on onion skin paper, for they were part of an exhibit: who and where the exhibit was held, and when, are unknown. The exhibit, based on evidence from the captions, was probably done soon after the war. The caption of the photograph in folder 22 mentions the "News Photo Editor of the A.E.F. (American Expeditionary Force)", so the photographs may also have been used for newspapers, mostly likely military.
Subjects include the relationship of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) with the troops, the St. Mihiel offensive of the United States Army, and United Staes Army troops in the occupation of Germany. There are also photograph of President Woodrow Wilson in Europe after the war and of General John J. Pershing, the commander of the American Expeditionary Force in Europe.
The description of the photographs in the box and folder list is at least partly based on that provided by the caption. Photographs with captions are noted as such, as well as those bearing the mark of the United State Army Signal Corps. Some photographs bear a stamp on the verso noting that the American Expeditionary Force censor has reviewed and passed them.

Arrangement

The United States Army Signal Corps World War I Photograph Collection is arranged by individual photograph or document in eighty-two folders, in one archival document box.
