Abstract: Sydney Smith Marshall papers (SAFR 14279, HDC 71) contains a copy book of letters written from January to March 1915 while
trading in North China. The letters combine feelings and daily activities with discussion of business dealings. The letters
begin on board the SHINYOU MARU in Honolulu. Some of the descriptions are of China and the Chinese. The collection also contains
a confirmation cable, two passports for Sydney Smith Marshall, one passport for Amanda Marshall (wife) and their son, and
a program for a concert in Tsing-Tho. The collection dates range 1915, 1918-1919. The collection has been processed to the
collection level and is open for use without restriction.

This collection was transferred from the Golden Gate National Recreation Area to the San Francisco Maritime National Historical
Park.
Historical or Biographical Note
Sydney Smith Marshall was born August 1874 in Gold Hill, Nevada and grew up in Alameda, California. His occupation is listed
as produce salesman. Mr. Marshall's parents owned and operated Marshall, Teggart & Company, General Commission Merchants and
Wholesale Produce Dealers in San Francisco, California. He appears on passenger lists for the PERCY EDWARD in March 1897,
SHINYO MARU in June 1915, ECUADOR in April 1920, GOLDEN STATE in May 1921. In 1981, his wife Amanda Z. Marshall is listed
in the Pension Files for the Civil War Pension Index for 1861-1934.
