Background
The Jules Stein Eye Institute was established in 1966 as part of the Center for the Health Sciences and the School of Medicine
at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Planning for the Institute began in 1961 when the UCLA Faculty of Ophthalmology
approached Jules Stein and the Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc. Foundation for assistance in the development of vision
science center. The building was not formally completed until March 2, 1967. However, the scientific activities of the Institute
began immediately after the building's dedication on November 3, 1966. The construction, maintenance, and equipping of the
Institute was largely funded through private philanthropy. This effort was led by Jules Stein, who prompted support from other
donors.
